Anatomy Of A Breathing Exercise

Inspired by Pauline Oliveros’s ‘Deep Listening’- the piece is multi-layered with sounds from the harmonica, a lullaby, and sounds from my roof in London

and Karachi. While listening to the work, we exist across all these layers. We travel to each sound and back, constantly shifting between each plane. The poly- vocal, multi-tonal characteristic of a harmonica aided to that experience. Stemming from my ‘Humming Project’ in CAPbaret, the sounds from the harmonica were the results of a series of breathing exercises I performed while

placing the harmonica on my mouth. More so, the piece is meant to also have an effect on the viewers breathing while they experience the sound, thus the title goes both ways.
